FOREWORD FROM THE MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS
Uganda attaches great importance to the existing cordial relations between our two countries. The opening of first consulate General in China is a historic landmark and a celebration of the mutual friendship between the two countries that has grown over the years, based on the principles of mutual respect , solidarity , mutual benefit , reciprocity and common prosperity.
For the past 49 years since diplomatic ties were established, we have had very good and mutually beneficial cooperation in the political, social , economic , cultural and technological areas and this has offered crucial support to the consolidation of the Sino Uganda partnership.
I am glad to notice that this excellent relationship has culminated into the establishment of the Uganda consulate general in Guangzhou which will cover four consular provincial areas in Guangdong , Fujian , Guangxi Zhang Autonomous Region and Hainan. The opening of partnerships In this fours areas of jurisdiction will no doubt further deepen the already existing cordial relation between our two countries . But more importantly, this provinces over abundant trade and investment opportunity to both Ugandan and Chinese entrepreneurs, given their combined GDP and USD 1.07 trillion, approximately 17% China’s total GDP, and a combined population of about 200 million people .
The core mission of the consulate will be in four areas namely , promotion in trade , investment , tourism and offering consular services. Uganda is known as the “Pearl of Africa” and is richly endowed in fertile soil , astonishing great resources and natural resources. Under the trade mission , value added products with high potential in the Chinese market such as coffee , cotton , fish , handicrafts , processed fruits and beef will be promoted . At the same time , Chinese investments in priority areas of infrastructure, energy , petroleum , ICT and mining will be aggressively pursued and encouraged through public, private partnerships (PPP). Consulate will also conduct several promotional events through cultural exchange , visits and documentaries showcasing Uganda as the ideal destination for Chinese tourist.
As we celebrate this milestone of the opening of the first Uganda Consulate General in China , I am confident and optimistic that excellent relations and mutual beneficial will continue to grow new heights. We are profoundly grateful to the Chinese government for the support and look forward to greater interaction among our two countries , and greater volumes of trade between our countries.
